Jeff Slack, AICP, Principal of Time & Place Preservation Services, is an accomplished planner and historical researcher. After earning an MA in historic preservation from Cornell University, Jeff worked in Washington, DC, where he played a lead role in the conception and design of the National Building Museum’s 1992 Honor Exhibition, Making It Work: Pittsburgh Defines a City. He also designed an interactive historic preservation walking tour for the Library of Congress and was a curator for the National Endowment for the Arts Design Access Program.
For over a decade he managed preservation projects for the Pittsburgh architecture firm Pfaffmann + Associates, leading restoration projects at the Allegheny Observatory, and the childhood homes of August Wilson and Rachel Carson. Building on his experience there as Senior Associate, he formed his own preservation firm in 2018. Recent work includes creation of a National Register nomination for the Crawford Grill No. 2 jazz club in the Hill District, documenting the significance of architect William S. Fraser and his design of the Herron Hill Pumping Station in Oakland, and developing a historic structure report for the Oliver Bath House on the South Side.
To share his passion for preservation and history, he developed the first preservation fieldwork course at the University of Pittsburgh, which he has taught since 2008. His expertise was recognized in 2013 by appointment to the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission’s State Historic Preservation Board followed by his serving as chair from 2017 to 2019.
